Safety of artificial sugars

We as Americans have been trying to have our “cake and eat it too”, especially over the last 50 years. It seems that we have always been looking for the magic pill to take so that our waistlines would not expand, but we could eat to our heart’s content. The first artificial sugar, Saccharin, was discovered in 1879. It was discovered by accident while two chemists were using toluene derivatives. Toluene is a by-product of gasoline production and used as a solvent in paint thinners.

We had the drink Tab that was zero calories. For many people, these artificial sugars caused gastric upset and sent them running to the bathroom. With Splenda, we may be closer to the reason the GUT reacts so violently. According to research at North Carolina State University, printed on June 4, 2023, Splenda, a common artificial sweetener, may cause DNA damage leading to leaky gut in an article titled:

“Genotoxic” Warning: Chemical Found in Common Sweetener Damages DNA by North Carolina State University, June 4th 2023.

How does Splenda cause DNA damage?

Splenda produces a toxic compound that can change our gene structure called sucralose-6-acetate. When this compound is ingested by eating or drinking a product with Splenda, it will break up DNA.

So, why is this important to you?

It is important because if the DNA of the cells in the microbiome or the GUT are changed, we can experience leaky GUT. Leaky GUT allows particles that are supposed to be digested and excreted to be absorbed in the blood stream, in a non-digested form. This causes inflammation, autoimmune problems, and metabolic problems. Imagine what do you do when you are just too tired and exhausted to exercise, or deal with life? You reach for sugar or some carbohydrate food to make you feel better and wash it down with a diet soda.

According to Susan Schiffman, corresponding author of the study and an adjunct professor in the joint department of biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “Our new work establishes that sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxic,” further noting “We also found that trace amounts of sucralose-6-acetate can be found in off-the-shelf sucralose, even before it is consumed and metabolized.”

You cannot cheat Mother Nature. Nourish your body with real food, not chemicals, or foods that will make profits for Multibillion dollar food companies, that make foods with the “Bliss Point.” Remember, artificial sugars make the body want more sweets and now we know why they may even cause weight gain, by disrupting the GUT microbiome.
