Weight gain after bariatric surgery

Learn how to meal prep and meet your goals with ChrisannaWait a minute, you mean people can gain weight even though they have gastric surgery?

Yes, indeed, in fact, 20-30% of clients who have gastric surgery either do not show a significant weight loss (primary non-response) or gain back a significant amount of weight that they did lose after surgery (secondary non-response). What is going on?

Recent, meaning research in the last 10 years, is showing that weight loss is not just related to decreasing food intake. It is related to circadian rhythms, stress, exercise, types of foods eaten, and the scheduling of food intake.

If you are someone who had a gastric sleeve or a gastric bypass, do you know, you really cannot eat more than 1 cup of food at a time? You need to stop drinking liquids 20 minutes before and start drinking liquids 30 minutes after you finish eating your food. This is to prevent too much pressure in your stomach. If you try and pack too much into your small stomach pouch you can cause Barrett’s Esophagus or start to have irritation of your esophagus, which will make swallowing difficult.

So, does surgery address your nutritional health?

No, surgery is a tool, to help you lose weight. If you do not use that tool wisely or do not understand how food works in your body or the “root cause of your over-eating”, gastric surgery is just a band-aid.
